Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a quaint city with canals everywhere. There were also bikes everywhere, which proved more problematic than the cars when crossing the street.

We stayed at the Banks Mansion, a fantastic boutique hotel in a perfect location in the city center. All of the food and drink was included – a full breakfast, the mini bar; they even served wine, cheese and charcuterie in the lobby. Our room was large and beautifully appointed; the bath had both a tub and a walk-in shower. The staff was young, friendly and accommodating.

We took our obligatory walk through the Red Light District; it was an adult Disneyworld. There were girls in windows scantily dressedsome beckoned, but most looked bored. We did not visit the "coffee houses," but we smelled lots of "coffee" as we walked the streets.

We braved a disappointing tour of the Anne Frank House, slogged through various art museums, and took an excellent Jewish history walking tour. But while the Netherlands has never been known as a culinary destination, the highlight of our stay in Amsterdam was the food.

Blauw aan de Wal - Blauw aan de Wal is located in the heart of Amsterdam's Red Light District, which is why Marlene chose it for our first night's dinner; she said she wanted to get it out of the way. An alleyway off the bustling street leads into a tranquil courtyard – and another world.
Restaurant As - "Restaurant As represents pure cooking. Demonstrating in a respectful manner, that one organism dies to keep another alive. We serve an appealing range of dishes, largely shaped by nature."
Restaurant De Kas - In 2001, top chef Gert Jan Hageman found a new purpose for an old greenhouse that belonged to Amsterdam's Municipal Nursery, which was due to be demolished. He converted it into Restaurant De Kas.
Wilde Zwijnen - Our last night in Amsterdam we dined at Wilde Zwijnen. Located in an up and coming residential neighborhood in Amsterdam East, the restaurant is well know by locals, attracting a young adventuresome crowd. Our taxi driver was surprised we knew of it.
