The Blue Shrimp is housed under a giant palapa on Los Muertos Beach in the Romantic Zone, next door to Daiquiri Dick’s. From our table at Daiquiri Dick’s, we've watched a number of restaurants come and go under this palapa over the years. The Blue Shrimp was originally located in the downtown area, on the Malecón, moving to its current location several years ago. We tried it for the first time last year and enjoyed our meal, so we decided to try it again.
The restaurant wasn’t crowded the evening we were there; it was Super Bowl Sunday. We were seated at a nice table overlooking the beach. The atmosphere is casual, with wooden planked floors and wooden bench seats.
The Blue Shrimp menu is predominantly seafood, with a few obligatory steaks; the bulk of the seafood is shrimp. There are multiple shrimp preparations or “chef’s creations,” to be ordered with medium or jumbo shrimp by the kilogram – quarter, half, or whole. We started with non-shrimp appetizers – ceviche and octopus. We were offered a large salad bar, but we're not salad bar fans. The Peruvian ceviche was spiced with aji and rocoto, with sweet potatoes and corn. It was excellent, and superior to the similar dish we had ordered at Taste. The chunks of sweet potato on the side were surprisingly good.
The arriero style octopus was also excellent. The octopus was perfectly grilled along side new potatoes.
We each ordered one-quarter kilo of jumbo shrimp; Marlene ordered the scampi preparation and I ordered the diabla, which I was told could be prepared as spicy as I liked. The shrimp were excellent quality and both preparations were fresh and tasty. The diabla sauce was appropriately spiced and delicious.
Our Super Bowl Sunday dinner at The Blue Shrimp surpassed our memory of last year's visit. Hopefully, this excellent seafood restaurant will become a fixture under the giant palapa on Los Muertos Beach.
